Cargo Sous Terrain- “Cargo Underground – People Above Ground”
Innovative Urban Logistics Solution for the Swiss Midland.
Rapidly changing and growing urban agglomerations assign new tasks to the persons in charge: supply, collection and disposal as well as the resulting logistical and traffic flows. Cities and their economy have to balance restricted infrastructure capacities, emission reduction targets, the needs and wishes of their inhabitants and budget constraints.
New solutions are needed to retain or even improve competitivenes in traffic management and logistics. On this note, the relevant stakeholders from business side and public authorities have joined forces to jointly elaborate innovative urban logistics solutions.
AMBERG LOGLAY integrated the initiators of this revolutionary concept and successfully transferred it from the idea phase through a full-fledged feasibility study into an implementation design.
This success bases on the maximum possible support of private enterprises. After this initial project phase, the base for supporters`participation was laid within a separate legal entity: the booster club “Fördervein Cargo sous terrain”.
Main investors are BKW, Die Mobiliar, Swisscom, CargoTube AG, SBB Cargo, Rhenus and the Interessensgemeinschaft des Detailhandes Schweiz (IG DHS). Public authorities are represented by the City of Zurich and the Bundesamt für Verkehr. AMBERG LOGLAY has taken over the operational project activities, continuity is guaranteed by the founding partners Yvette Koerber and Sven-Erik Jacobsen.
Size and topography of Switzerland lead to a logical geographical development of urban areas. These areas have been consistently growing over the years and need to be logistically supplied. Within the project “Cargo sous terrain” the flow of goods of all relevant industries were analyzed in detail. Real flow data has been combined with statistical data.
This leads to a unique quality and high reliability for the assessment of the routing and the effect on the above logistics world including logistical cross-points. Positive side effect: logistical players and users are involved from the beginning.
Underlying principle of “Cargo sous terrain” is the separation of freight traffic from passenger transportation. Thereby, numerous logistical advantages are created: operation costs are significantly lower and customers’ needs are fulfilled. The main challenge in the solution design lies within the complexity within and between the logistics layers:
Level One is the assessment of the requirement profile towards the freight infrastructure. Demanding segments are part of the solution design from day one. In Switzerland this meant leading roles were taken over by the retail industry as well by logistics service providers and shippers. The users` advantages comes first, nevertheless allowing for long-term profitability of the system.
Level Two is Infrastructure Design. Within an interdisciplinary iterative solution design process scenarios are developed. World-class competencies complement the core project team. Within “Cargo sous terrain” this refers to competencies in: Market Analysis, Mechatronics and Intralogistics, Construction, Legal as well as Economic Modeling and Sustainability Consulting. All involved partners are today also members of the booster club.
Level Three is key: Business Modeling. The Business Model of “Cargo sous terrain” should be open for all users and should integrate existing market players. Thereby, the risk of monopolistic structures within urban areas is diminished from the beginning. Not only construction and operation costs count, sustainability is a key element. The consequently economic design of the infrastructure allows for a private financing structure. Thereby, innovative infrastructure financing models were created that open up diverse options for realization.
Understanding and managing complexity within the process is key. Mutual understanding of all stakeholders: business side, public authorities and investors are of vital importance. Experience proved the added value of AMBERG LOGLAY thinking process: attractive, holistic solutions are guaranteed.

We conducted all phases from project idea to solution design. The relevant stakeholders were identified and integrated. The relevant disciplines were directed to one solution and an optimum solution design was developed. One design that balances future market needs, profitability, ecology and sustainability.
